The original painting, and this reproduction print of the picture, depict a view over the field next to the farmhouse at The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust Centre at Caerlaverock, with Criffel beyond. Criffel is a 570 metre high hill known for its steep climb and stunning views.
This was the first Scott artist’s proof print published by Ackermann & Sons (Scott’s dealers and UK agents) since 1970.
The firm of printers who produced the previous proof were no longer in business, so Ackermann proceeded to get samples and quotes from several printing companies. The prestigious company of The Curwen Press Ltd., was selected to print the reproduction.
A publication date of September 1975 was chosen to coincide with the original painting (a 20 x 30” oil on canvas) going on show at the first Ackermann exhibition of Scott’s work for many years.
200 remarque prints* were to be produced, along with the 600 signed proof prints Ackermann usually issued for their Scott editions.
The prints were planned to be ready for 18th July for signing, and for Scott to execute the remarque drawings.
Scott donated the original canvas to the Wildfowl Trust to be sold to sealed bids, which were to be opened on 24th September at the private view of the exhibition.
In 1981, the Slimbridge shop was selling the remarque proof of the print for £280 inc. VAT. In 1990 the retail price of the signed proof print was £62.50.
* Remarque prints have unique small drawings and paintings added by the artist in the margin, and can increase the value and collectability of a print.
